- Comprehensive urban & rural training
- Strong community support & mentorship
- Cutting-edge research opportunities
How it Works
As a student at the 天美传媒 Department of Family medicine, you will go through the following training blocks:
Longitudinal Clinical Experience (LCE) — Years 1-2
The LCE provides students with early real-life clinical exposure in the patient care setting. There they can apply classroom learning from the Longitudinal Themes communications sessions and newly developed clinical skills to the care of patients while simultaneously developing long-term relationships with community preceptors. These placements provide an excellent opportunity to expose students to Family Medicine early in their careers.
Clerkship Rotations (Year 3)
The Year 3 Family Medicine Clerkship Rotation provides senior medical students with an opportunity to consolidate their skills in assessment and management of the wide range of illnesses and concerns presented to a primary care physician in a variety of practice locations.
Objectives for this rotation are framed around the following CANMEDS-FMU:
4 weeks in a rural rotation and 4 weeks in an urban location.
Structured educational sessions, including:
- Orientation and introduction
- Large group session on musculoskeletal and palliative care
- Student project presentations on core Family Medicine topics

Elective Rotations
Preclerkship - Years 1-2
Preclerkship electives in Family Medicine are varied, mirroring the variability of Family Medicine practices. Focused experiences are available in culinary medicine, wilderness medicine, inner city medicine, and rural family medicine. You can also discover our versatility by choosing your own collection of Family Medicine elective experiences.
Clerkship - Years 3-4
We are proud to offer electives in Family Medicine in a variety of settings to Year 3 and Year 4 medical students. These electives allow students to experience the breadth of clinical practice available to family physicians, ranging from comprehensive full-scope Family Medicine to inpatient hospitalist medicine.
Electives are key opportunities which allow students to explore a career in Family Medicine. Our electives typically assign students to a primary preceptor which allows for mentorship and relationship building. Students may also seek electives to bolster their residency applications and to obtain a favourable reference letter.

Family Medicine Interest Group
The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is a student-led group at the U of A dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of family medicine. The FMIG aims to increase exposure to family medicine throughout undergraduate and graduate education, and help students recognize the crucial role it plays in our healthcare system. The group hosts a myriad of events throughout the year, which offer students opportunities to meet one another and make connections with residents and physicians in general practice.
