Workplace Injury + Healthcare Access
Workplace Injury
As you participate in the clinical learning environment, anatomy labs, and other learning experiences, there is a risk for potential injury or exposure to blood and bodily fluid or non-blood borne infection from patients or lab specimens or other infectious and environmental hazards. If any such injury or accidental exposure occurs, please follow the protocol outlined below and in the MD Program's Medical Student Exposure to Infectious and Environmental Hazards Policy.
Responding to an Injury, incident, or Exposure
- Seek immediate and appropriate medical attention and/or first aid.
- Notify your preceptor / immediate supervisor.
- If you are at an AHS facility, call the Incident Reporting Line (for blood / bodily fluid communicable disease exposure) or report via MySafetyNet for all other injuries.
- If you are on campus in Edmonton, report to the University Health Centre or call Health Link (811).
- If you are on campus in Grande Prairie, report to the College & Community Health Centre or call Health Link (811).
- If you are in a non-AHS facility, contact Occupational Health & Safety in the agency and follow the directions given by them; contact your primary preceptor and/or call Health Link (811).
- If you are on an away elective connect with the agency's OH&S and follow directions or contact your preceptor and follow the appropriate procedures. Alternatively, report to the nearest urgent care or emergency department for instructions.
Ensure:
- you indicate to all health care professionals that you are in contact with that this is a work-related incident
