The Division of Urology at 天美传媒 offers a 12-month fellowship in Focal Therapy and Targeted Biopsy for Prostate Cancer. Depending on the needs of the successful candidate, this fellowship could be extended for an additional 12 months, with the second year weighted heavily towards academic training.

Annual Fellowship Date: July 1 to June 30

Eligibility

The fellowship position requires the applicant to have completed residency training in Urology and to have successfully passed licensing examinations in their country of origin. Successful candidates would need to hold full licensure in Alberta.

Clinical Sites

In keeping with the Division of Urology’s unique set up in Northern Alberta, our fellow will join subspecialty staff in their clinical duties at the Dianne and Irv Kipnes Urology Centre (KUC) at the Kaye Edmonton clinic, 天美传媒 Hospital (UAH), Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), and Misericordia Community Hospital (MCH).

Our world class ambulatory care facility at the KUC will be their home base for clinics, ambulatory procedures (i.e. targeted prostate biopsies and cystoscopies), and academic/administrative work. Focal therapy surgery and inpatient care will be performed at the UAH.

Funding

$65,000 CDN per annum

Clinical Experience

It is anticipated the fellow would perform between 50 and 75 focal therapy procedures and 500 targeted prostate biopsies each year. They would also be involved in the Prostate Health Clinic to see new referrals for men with elevated PSA blood tests.

Academic Experience

The fellow would be highly involved in clinical research with clinical trials woven into everyday clinical encounters. These include surgical trials, biopsy trials, and industry sponsored device, imaging, and medication trials. It is anticipated that the fellow would have at least 4 first author publications each year.

Fellowship Structure

Typical week: 0.5 OR days, 4 minor procedure days (biopsy and cystoscopy), 0.5 clinic day

Candidates will be fully privileged for the duration of their fellowship to allow independent encounters, billing and to help compliment divisional duties as required.

2-year fellowship would transition from a 5 days/week clinical model to a 2days/week clinical, to increase their academic experience. A master’s in Translational Medicine or Surgery may be offered as this fellowship matures.

Professional Responsibilities

Compliance with the structure of the program, leadership of the director, the Urology Fellowships Committee, under the umbrella of the Division of Urology.

Respectful interaction with peers, other specialists & allied health workers

  • Compliance with statutory leave, and holidays (4 weeks) and disclosure of any reason that may hinder meeting these obligations.
  • Reporting feedback appropriately through the mid-term and final evaluation processes, and provision of a final report on activity and certificate at the end of training.

Medical Expert

The fellow will perform between 50 and 75 focal therapy procedures and 500 targeted prostate biopsies each year. They would also be involved in the Prostate Health Clinic to see new referrals for men with elevated PSA blood tests.

Communicator

The fellow will interact with ~1500-2000 patients per year and will present at Urology Grand Rounds, as well as local, regional, national, and international conferences.

Collaborator

The fellow will collaborate with the fellowship director, other urologists, medical office staff, and allied health professionals such as nurses in each type of clinical encounter (clinic, OR, minor procedures). The fellow will also be a part of multicenter international clinical trials and consortiums.

Leader

The fellow will help the fellowship director to supervise residents and medical students during clinical duties. The fellow will also be provide supervision to trainees in a research capacity.

Health Advocate

The fellow will be involved in research projects that focus on underserved populations including Indigenous men with prostate cancer.

Scholar

The fellow will be involved in multiple clinical research projects including clinical trials as well as imaging and biorepository creation. The fellow is anticipated to present their research findings at conferences and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts. The fellow will participate in weekly lab meetings of the fellowship director.

Professional

The fellow will be exposed to and perform themselves professional behavior when dealing with prostate cancer patients. They will expected to demonstrate a commitment to patients by applying best practices and adhering to high ethical standards.
