Earn 5 credits by taking the Japanese Language Module (Japanese 1 or 2) and Japan Studies Module.

New for 2026: optional “にほんご文法 (Japanese Grammar)” classes (beginner to intermediate), taught by ICU students and faculty. No additional fee and no credits awarded.

Enhance your Japanese skills while immersing yourself in Japan’s culture, history, and traditions.

Participate in lectures, discussions, cultural activities, and excursions while staying in an on-campus dorm.

Eligibility Requirements
Open to: Those from all faculties who are currently enrolled as degree-seeking students in, or have graduated from, a college or university as of the first day of the program, and have an academic interest in Japan.
Level: Undergraduate, Graduate
GPA: 3.0
Program Criteria:
- A minimum Japanese language level of upper beginner is required at the time of application; (completed CEFR A2.1; equivalent to )
**This is equivalent to those students who have finished:
'初級日本語げんき 1 GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese I',
'みんなの日本語初級1 'Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I', or
'NAKAMA なかま 1'
*Complete beginners with no prior study are not eligible. - A minimum English language level is required; (TOEFL 79 / IELTS 6.0 is recommended)

Fees & Costs

Nomination Fee: $250 CAD
2025 Program Fee: 369,700 JPY (approx. $3,500 CAD) — to be updated for 2026.

Housing
Participants stay in the ICU on-campus dormitory:

Two students per room (beds, desks, air conditioning).
